How to Edit the SolidWorks material database
Tips and Tricks • Marketing • 8 April 2015
Hi there,
In this post we will discuss the SolidWorks Material database.
There are times when we have to edit the name or values in the default SolidWorks Material database.
Normally when it comes to 1 or 2 material values, we recommend to make a copy of that material and add it to the Custom Material database at the bottom of the Material list.
Now what if we have to rename over a hundred materials names?
Well we can do that with a simple tool.
I use Notepad++
Notepad++ is a text editor and source code editor for use with Microsoft Windows.

This will allow us to Edit the SolidWorks Material database in its native format (SLDMAT).
You can locate the Material database from Solidworks under Tools, Options , System options , File location, Material database (Under Show Folders for).
Please note that before doing any change to any database, always make a back up copy of that database in case something goes wrong.
Also we do not except any responsibility should your database get corrupted due to modifications.
If you are comfortable with this then please see the video link below on how to edit the SolidWorks Material database.
