Looking to the Future: Wearable Technologies

The Callaghan Institute is an innovation hub providing R&D services to New Zealand businesses – here’s their prediction for the future of wearable technologies.
The Callaghan Institute in New Zealand is a government agency which has long been recognised as a pioneer in the fields of research, technology and design development.
The exceptionally skilled team of scientists and engineers at the institute provide advice and the skills to help businesses both large and small (including our very own Emirates Team New Zealand) push the limits of their designs. With access to large-scale machinery and product design software such as SolidWorks, businesses are often able to achieve a lot more than they could otherwise, when working with the Institute.
Last month the Institute released the infographic below, entitled ‘The Wearable Technology – Improving Performance and Wellbeing’. The graphic identifies the wearables available to market today; the technological advancements currently underway that will work to further develop these wearables; and the ultimate benefits the new generation of wearables will have on our lives which will allow us to live healthier, work safer and play smarter.
Interest in the development of wearable technology is increasing as technology gets smaller and less invasive for use on the body. Callaghan Institute Chief Technology Officer Chris Hartshorn predicts that wearable technology will change nearly every aspect of our lives “..in the workplace, wearables could bring not only safer environments but greater efficiencies. When you think about ageing populations and the demand for hospital beds, these devices could make entire economies more sustainable – and save lives.”
